The Old Gaol was constructed in 1859 by convicts assigned to the road engineer Thomas Bain for the construction of the Prince Alfred Pass. Apart from the Old Gaol Restaurant, the complex also houses an art gallery, maritime museum, angling museum, a bead shop, an elephant room, a re-created jail cell and an art school.
